Bad US Movies on South American Buses #3

it was only a matter of time before steven seagal made his maiden appearance in this series. thankfully, he waited until our last bus ride of the february trip to do so. "marked for death" is an action potboiler that has seagal portraying a DEA agent whose family is attacked by an evil gang of reggae-loving, voodoo-practicing jamaicans (and let's be honest, are there any other kind of jamaicans?). this leads to a lot of vigilante-style justice which can be seen in the trailer.

of course, when seagal is out for justice, the bodies start flying through 20th story windows, having arms broken, and heads smashed through plate glass. cars also may or may not be chased over hilly city streets and/or driven through the walls of a shopping mall.

all of these minor deaths and dismemberments mean little to seagal, however, because there is a shadowy leader behind the gang, the sinister Screwface. apart from the whole attacking seagal's family, things get extra personal when Screwface puts a voodoo curse on him that will ensure him dying. one could even say that seagal's character has been selected for killing.....or something like that. i suppose the writers of this film would've come up with a catchier way to phrase it.

regardless, seagal and his friend (a high-school football coach of all things!) chase Screwface out of Chicago and all the way back to jamaica. it's a good thing too that the high school football coach friend is african-american or else this movie could be considered a little bit racist in retrospect....

i'm sure you can imagine what happens in jamaica and to Screwface ultimately. what? you can't? ok, here is the youtube clip then. in a lot of ways, this movie was ridiculously awful. and yet, there were parts of me that kind of enjoyed watching that no-good-nick's arm get cracked at the elbow. or maybe i've hung out with Matt Michelson too much.

high point: the opening scene in which a young Danny Trejo gets chased down. it's always good to see him in movies.

low point: the length of which bad boys 2 ripped off this movie. anything that inspired bad boys 2 is reprehensible on many levels.

"yeah, right" moment: the fact they showed this very R-rated movie on a bus full of children.

I think that small children should see any movie with Danny Trejo.

i can't believe they showed this R-rated movie on a bus full of me! Segal and his back-cracking ways still haunt my dreams. jennie told me that she's been hearing me murmuring 'don't do it mr. segal, please don't' in my sleep. i'm clearly scarred for life. people aren't supposed to break other people over their knees like twigs. it's just wrong.
